Visiting grandma’s house is an amazing feeling, no matter how old you are. Grandma Peggy gives the warmest hugs, calls you beautiful, and serves up what she calls a “light snack” that’s really a full feast she’s been working on since morning. Unfortunately, Grandma Peggy lost her grandson Sam, who used to visit with his friends every Wednesday for a tasty meal. In a beautiful gesture to help her and honor Sam’s memory, his friends now come over for breakfast, bringing joy back to Grandma’s life.
Grandma Peggy and Sam had a special tradition of having breakfast together every Wednesday.
This tradition began in October 2021 when Sam, knowing his grandma was an excellent cook, would drop by for breakfast on Wednesdays. With a late start to school, he enjoyed catching up with her. Soon, his friends joined in, making Wednesday the best day for Peggy and the teens. Everyone preferred Grandma Peggy’s meals over the school cafeteria or trendy food joints because she added a secret ingredient – grandma’s love.
“Wednesday is my favorite day of the week. I will feed them as long as they come,” Grandma Peggy shared.
Sadly, Sam passed away in a car crash in 2022. On the day Sam passed away, his friends came to Peggy’s doorstep to offer comfort and support.
Grieving together, the friends laughed and cried, remembering Sam and slowly healing. Grief is a lonely emotion, but having friends who understand makes it more bearable. Sam, despite his short life, left a lasting impact with his genuine friendships.
As the school year was wrapping up, everyone was curious if this tasty tradition would carry on. Grandma Peggy had no plans to stop it, keeping her doors open for the kids, who were thrilled to know that. Jeremy was sure Sam would like that. “He would want us to continue, so we’re continuing it. We’re all here for each other.”
Even after his passing, his friends continued to gather at Peggy’s, keeping the tradition alive. As of 2023, over 30 students meet every Wednesday at Grandma Peggy’s house, turning her small kitchen into a warm and loving space filled with memories of Sam. Although cooking for 30 people is challenging, Grandma Peggy isn’t alone. Parents, town residents, and local businesses contribute, ensuring the tradition continues without exhausting her.
“It’s a tiny house, but its walls are filled with love,” Grandma Peggy shared. She finds comfort in these weekly gatherings, reminding her of cherished moments she had with Sam.
