She was born with a rare medical condition
Tessa entered the world with a rare condition called complete congenital arhinia, leaving her without a nose. This unusual anomaly, experienced by only a handful of individuals worldwide, brought unique challenges into the young girl’s life from the very start. Nevertheless, she opted not to allow her condition to dictate her journey, tackling life with unmatched enthusiasm and passion.
Arhinia manifests when the nose isn’t able to form in the womb, leading to the lack of nose and nostrils on Tessa’s face. In Tessa’s distinctive case, her condition extends beyond the absence of the nose to include the olfactory system, the part of the brain responsible for recognizing smells. Despite the hurdles presented by her condition, Tessa’s parents regarded her as a beautiful and extraordinary little lady.
Upon uncovering their unborn child’s facial anomaly during an ultrasound, Tessa’s parents, Grainne and Nathan Evans, went through a spectrum of emotions. Learning five months into the pregnancy that their daughter would be born without a nose was undeniably shocking. Despite all that, they resolutely committed to providing Tessa with the best possible support.
Tessa has undergone a series of medical procedures and surgeries
Following her delivery, she was moved to the intensive care unit, where a tracheotomy was performed to aid in breathing. At a mere eleven months old, Tessa had to endure cataract surgery, compounding the hurdles she confronted at such a delicate stage of life.
After two years, Tessa went through cosmetic surgery to implant prostheses under her skin, setting the foundation for the eventual creation of an artificial nose. It was a tough choice for the parents. Yet, they viewed it as a chance to progressively refine Tessa’s appearance, working towards a more conventionally shaped profile. This procedure included bone and skin grafts, typically advised during adolescence when facial growth is complete.
Tessa has endured physical challenges, yet her spirit remains so strong
Tessa has grown accustomed to a life without a nose, navigating through breathing via her mouth and the absence of the sense of smell, a faculty many of us frequently overlook. Despite these obstacles, Tessa’s contagious joy and zest for life serve as a compelling testament to her resolute determination to embrace life.
“Tessa has proved everybody wrong. She exceeded everybody’s expectations,” Grainne said.
“She also proved that she is a perfect girl. She always lifts the mood whenever she walks into the room. She walks into any room, and she can lift the room’s mood and make everyone happy,” her husband, Nathan, added.
